What is Maté?
Mate is a traditional South American caffeine infused drink and energy booster. It is prepared by steeping dried leaves of the yerba mate plant in hot water and is served with a metal straw called a bombilla. Hot mate will taste similar to a strong, slightly bitter tea and it has been enjoyed in South America for hundreds of years.
Mate is usually served to guests and is generally shared among groups of friends. Mate can also be found on the beach where numerous vendors walk around selling the beverage in large circular containers.
