What is a Pastel ?

In Brazil, a pastel (pastéis) is a typical Brazilian street-food snack. It is a thin crust pie with assorted fillings, fried in vegetable oil and shaped like a half-circle or rectangle. The most popular fillings include meat, cheese, palmito (heart of palm), carne seca (dried meat), catupiry cream cheese, chicken and small shrimp. It is traditionally sold on the streets, at local markets, or in fast-food shops known as pastelarias. Eat it with a glass of caldo de cana, which is sugarcane juice served cold.
