What is Shisa nyama?
Shisa nyama or braai meat are terms used in South Africa and other parts of Southern Africa to describe meat grilled on an open fire with wood or charcoal. Fresh butchery cuts of meat are usually grilled for shisa nyama including beef, chicken, pork and South African favourites boerewors and sosaties. Braai is an Afrikaans word for grilled meat, while shisa nyama is a Zulu word which literally means ‘burn meat’. Shisa nyama is usually enjoyed with a side of pap and chakalaka.
