What is Egg Cream?
Egg cream is one of the Big Apple’s most iconic and nostalgic drinks. It is simple mixture of milk, seltzer water, and vanilla or chocolate syrup. The drink famously contains neither eggs nor cream. The egg cream was almost surely the creation of NYC’s Jewish immigrants. In the beginning, it was a drink produced almost exclusively in New York (particularly Brooklyn). Egg creams can still be found at some spots in NYC and along the East Coast.
Where to eat Egg Cream in New York City
1. Katz's Delicatessen
Katz’s Delicatessen has been a New York institution since 1888. It is known for its massive pastrami sandwich, it’s fun atmosphere, and a cameo in the movie “When Harry Met Sally”. Order the pastrami on rye with Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray soda or the egg cream to drink—it does not get more classic New York than that.
